I first heard him on TV. He was singing the theme song of a Taiwan serial called "You Chai Zong Shi An Cuo Ling ". The song ---- "Lian Ai Zhen Hou Qun" . And what a song it was. At that time I think I was in Sec 2..only 14. What caught my attention was the song's lyrics, not to mention it's length. It was the first time I heard a song that talks so directly about everyday life. I mean...most songs do talk about life and revolve around love. But this song tackles the theme so directly, so explicitly. That was how it started. I remember staying up late just to catch the show(it was funny!) and also to listen to this song.
So imagine my delight when I found one of his tape lying in my brother's cassette collection. It was a double effort of him and Wu Zhong Xian. After listening to the tape, there was no turning back. I knew I had met the master himself. So quirky and different were his songs that there was no way any singers could be compared to him. I had also found out that he wrote (and still writes!) most (if not all) of his songs. Ahh... a singer AND composer...talent at it's best.
Got to know more of him as I listened to more of his songs. Was even more impressed when I realised he wrote my favourite fAYe wONg song. My favourite male singer and my favourite female singer....little wonder that the song remains my on top of my list till today. Another one of his efforts with a female singer has left a deep impression on me. The song is "yi" by Lin Hui Ping and him. This song is REALLY fantastic. I have finally found the song....after what seemed like an eternal search....ahh Life IS good.
Read someone's comment on Shu Jun...he said that Shu
Jun's difference is that his lyrics actually depicts his actual inner emotions. So when we
listen to him it is as if we get to know him...his innermost thoughts...his
feelings....Huang Shu Jun, as a person and not Huang Shu Jun the singer.I have to agree.
Listening to him....I can visualise his life story unfolding before me. All this songs
seem to talk about him...and some of his songs also seem to be about me. That's the power
of Shu Jun.
In the last few years, his songs had taken a new direction. A new concept. Frankly,I prefer this old style, which was more direct. The lyrics were not direct mind you. In fact, I spent countless hours cracking my head over what he was trying to convey in some songs. It is the feeling the song brings. That is what's direct. It just came right at you leaving you speechless and moved to tears. But I guess people do change. Perhaps it's a more matured way of thinking. Perhaps its a different outlook of life. Perhaps it's just a new style of music. Whatever the case, I thank you Shu Jun. For bringing me the songs, the smiles, the tears, the laughter. All the emotions, thoughts and enjoyment that your songs had brought to me. I thank you.
